Quiet Moments

Last week, Lizzy needed someone to hang out with Paceson while she took a test because she didn't have any other time that she could take it. I was happy to do so, obviously. It was so fun to watch him waddle around and get into all sorts of stuff. He is so dang cute! He turns one this month and has been working on walking and eating real food with all his teeth (he has at least 8, I'm pretty sure).

It started to be nap time and so he got a little upset that his mom wasn't there. When we got to his room, he started crying. I gave him his binky and sat down in the rocking chair with him. I know parents work really hard to teach their kids to self soothe and so I am probably ruining all of that by just holding and rocking the child, but I'm okay with that. I sang a few primary songs as I rocked him to try to calm him down (I apparently need to brush up on my primary songs, because I could only think of a few at first).

Rocking that sleeping baby and singing those songs was an incredible moment of peace. Those are the moments when I think I come to understand at least a small part of what it is like to be a mother and to feel that much love.

I worry about having kids often. Silly seeing as I'm not even married, but it is something I have thought a lot about. Getting a PhD doesn't easily lend itself to having kids, now or someday. I worry about what kind of mother I will be. I worry that I won't experience the extreme love I see so many mothers experience. But times like the one I had with Paceson, and countless others with my own nieces and nephews, gives me hope and faith that when the time comes everything will work out.

Until that day, I'm grateful for those around me who let me experience just a little bit of their heaven by sharing experiences with their children.

Education

On my way to Massachusetts for my interview, I read the majority of and finished I Am Malala

Had I not been on an airplane, I would have been bawling. I was totally holding back tears. Needless to say, I loved it.  I Am Malala is the biography of a Pakistani girl who spoke out for girls' education and as a consequence was shot in the head by the Taliban. As such, she has never been back to her home in Pakistan because it is not safe enough for her to return. Any explanation of just how incredible Malala is and what she has done would not be adequate. Everyone should just read the book.

As I was reading, I was struck by how incredibly grateful I am for what I have. My parents have always stressed to me the importance of education. I can't remember a time in my life where I didn't know that I had to go to college. It was never a question for me. While my experience is in no way the same as what Malala went through, I can kind of relate to how Malala felt. While there was nothing in the actual doctrines of her religion against the education of women, she felt pressure from the people ascribing to extremes in the culture of her religion to stop her education prematurely. Our church leaders all encourage women to get a good education and to be continuously learning. However, the general culture puts pressure on women to give up education in order to be wives and mothers. It has never been that way with my parents though. They taught me that I can do anything and that I should never have to give up learning for myself. They have been my strongest support as I have gone through college and as I made the decision to get a Ph.D. Like me, Malala had parents who knew the importance of education and encouraged her to stand up for herself and others like her. She and her family almost paid the ultimate price for their courage, but they have stayed strong through it all and don't regret their stance.

When I tell people I am going to get a Ph.D., they tend to get really impressed. But the truth is, they shouldn't be. Yes, I have worked hard to get to where I am in life and will have to work even harder in the years to come. But really, me getting this far is not as impressive as they think. The truth is that I have never really had to fight for my education. I was raised in a good home and neighborhood. I attended schools with adequate funding and where my teachers cared about their students. I got scholarships to college and have been given opportunities that many other people never have.

This semester I got to watch my best friend Lizzy's little baby boy, Paceson, for a couple hours a week while both she and her husband were in class.
Cute Lizzy and Paceson
Every time Lizzy thanked me for watching him, I had the overwhelming feeling that I should be the one thanking her, not the other way around. She has been an incredible example to me. I could see how difficult it was for her to leave him with me. The love she has for her little boy is beyond words. But she is determined to graduate. She is fighting for her education, fighting in a way that I never have.

My mom did the same thing. She finished school despite already being a mom. When I was in fourth grade she went back to school and she has spent everyday since trying to help her students learn and grow. She wants them to love and value education as she does. Shannon has taught for three years at schools with high populations of underprivileged students. She helps them to fight for their education everyday.

Someday, I am sure I will be faced with great obstacles to my education. But thanks to the incredible examples in my life, I know that when the time comes the fight is possible and worth it.

An Aunt Again!

(Written April 2, 2013)

Since Lizzy came to school almost two years ago, we have gone to devotional together on Tuesdays. We call it our devotional date. I love Tuesdays.

As we sat down for devotional today, Lizzy and I had a conversation that went like this:

Lizzy: "So next semester we have two more people who want to come with us to devotional."
Me (nodding my head): "Mary"
Lizzy (glancing at the ultrasound on Aaron's phone): "And..."

Obviously I immediately hugged her and didn't let go for a long, long time. And I may or may not have teared up (then and now as I write this).

Yes, that is right. My best friend for literally as long as I can remember is going to be a mom. She is just going to be the greatest!

I'm so excited for by little Lizzy and cute, cute Aaron!

Baby Sainsbury--Coming October 9th!

(Written April 23, 2013)

Now that she's officially announced it to the world, can I just say how excited I am for Lizzy and Aaron to have their little BOY in October?!

I'm totally going to be the favorite Aunt (shhh...don't tell Mary!).

Happy Birthday, Lizzy Lou!

Wednesday was this beautiful girl's birthday!
Lizzy's Senior Prom

Lizzy and I met and became friends when my family moved into a house two houses down from hers in November of 1994.  And we've been friends ever since.  That makes her my longest friend (outside by siblings and tied with Mary, of course!)
Preschool: Aren't we cute?!

Since it was Lizzy's first birthday away from home, I decided that I would cook her breakfast since her mom usually does it.  It was fun to get to start the day together and walk to school together!

Best Friends!

After our long day of school, we went to Lizzy's apartment and then out to dinner with her roommates and Megan.

Lizzy wanted to take a picture with the Jimmer sign and made Megan and me be in it too

Two of her roommates had somewhere to go, but the rest of us walked around the Riverwoods and got ice cream at Provo Beach Resort.  Then we went back to Lizzy's apartment and had a good time talking and making prank calls...okay, so Rachel was pretty much the only one who did any actual calling, but the rest of us provided numbers and encouragement.

What I love about Lizzy:  She is just so good!  I know it sounds silly, but it's true.  She has always been a good friend to me and is someone I know I can turn to and talk to no matter how long it has been.  I am who I am because of her and her family.  She has an incredible memory for people and events.  I love getting her texts describing a childhood reference she made that no one else got (What do you want?  Colored eggs.  What colors do you want?).  She cares about everyone she meets and is concerned for everyone's welfare and feelings.  I don't think she can do a purposefully mean thing.  She is super smart and hard working.  She's also super out-going, which is something I wish I was more like her in.  She makes friends easily and makes everyone feel loved and included.
She has her head on straight, knows what she wants from this life, and refuses to settle for less.  She relies wholly on the Lord in times of need and is continuously striving to overcome her flaws and weaknesses.  I can't tell you the number of times she has told me she has prayed to learn to have patience and love for people she is frustrated with.
She reminds me so much of her mom, Debbie sometimes.  Which is a huge compliment.  She has been a lifesaver for me more times than I can count and I feel so incredibly lucky to have her as my best, and longest friend!
