The Grad School Process

Warning: This is a long post. I put off writing about the whole process because I wasn't sure of the outcome yet. But I need it documented.

For some reason I naively thought that the whole graduate school process would be better and more clear once I took the GRE. Boy was I wrong. You see, after the GRE is when all of the doubts set in. I didn't do poorly on the GRE, but I didn't do as well as I wanted. I started to doubt what I wanted to do and what I was capable of doing. I had always thought I wanted to apply to Clinical Psychology Ph.D. programs, but I wasn't so sure anymore. For about three weeks I drove everyone around me crazy as I went back and forth between what types of programs I was going to apply to. My poor roommates and parents. I seriously changed my mind SO many times.

Finally, I went and talked to the professor I've worked for for over three years. I told him that I was majorly confused and needed his advice. The first thing he asked me was I wanted to do, what my eventual goal was. I told him I wanted to be a professor but I was starting to wonder if that was the right thing for me. He told me not to let the GRE get me down because it was good enough and that the rest of my CV was strong. Then he told me that he had complete faith in my ability to do whatever I set my mind to and that I should go for what I want and not worry about trying to figure out all the logistics of my full life plan. He told me not to be ruled by my fear because it would work out.

I left the meeting comforted, but conflicted. Applying to Ph.D. programs went against almost all logic. Four or five years is a long time to commit to being in one place. A few days later I called my mom and talked to her about my conversation with my professor. She told me she thought I should apply to Ph.D. programs because he knew a lot more about the programs and what I was capable of doing than anyone else. And because she knew that is what I truly wanted. So that's what I did.

In all actuality, I didn't really do any of this the logical way, which is slightly unusual for me. Usually logic rules for me. (Just ask my dad. He is constantly reminding me to let my heart have a say too.) The average acceptance rate for Clinical Psychology Ph.D. programs nationwide is around 2%. Most people suggest you apply to 10-12 programs. I applied to 4. After looking at programs, 4 stuck out to me the most, and I figured that if I didn't get in this year, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Most people end up going to graduate school after being graduated for at least a year anyway, so I wouldn't be usual in that way.

Getting all of the applications filled out was stressful, but I got it done before finals Fall Semester and then was just left to wait. In the end, I ended up getting interviews at BYU and Clark University in Massachusetts. I had the BYU interview the first week of February and though it was a long day, I actually really enjoyed myself. I felt like I showed the committee who I was and knew that I had done my best. Apparently it worked because the Monday after my interview, and just hours before I left for my interview in Massachusetts, my mentor told me that I had a spot in the program if I chose to take it. I was visibly relieved.

I spent a few days in Massachusetts because I wanted to make sure the weather wouldn't make it so that I couldn't get to my interview on the right day (which I had to do on that day because Shannon got married the day after the other interview day). The interview at Clark was different than BYU, but not necessarily in a bad way. I was impressed with the program and the way it was set up and I really enjoyed talking with the professor who would be my mentor if I went there. He was very personable and we had a fun time discussing research. Again, I left feeling content with how it had gone. I knew that they had seen the real me and that whatever happened would be right.

Originally I decided I was going to wait to hear back from Clark before I made any official decision. They told us they would let us know in about two weeks from when we interviewed. As time went by though, the more and more I thought about it, the more I realized I didn't need to hear back from Clark. I wanted to be at BYU, not Clark. I didn't immediately tell anyone this or make it official though. I had almost not applied to BYU because I had a few worries about it and I wanted to make sure I could dispell those worries before I made a final decision. I didn't want to stay at BYU because it was easy or more comfortable for me. I didn't want to stand in my own way and hinder myself because I was scared of doing something outside my comfort zone.

In the end, I know that isn't why I want to be at BYU. I chose BYU because I know that I can succeed here. It is the right balance of competition and cooperation to push me but not overwhelm me. I used to think that being familiar with the people and the work would make me complaisant but now I understand that in this case it just gives me a head start. I guess I could still end up that way, but that is up to me. If I work hard and never stop trying my best to be the best at what I do, I won't be hindered by being here. For me, the smaller start up costs mean I can do the things I truly want to do and do them well.

So, I went into see my mentor today and made it official. On September 2nd, I start a whole new journey. BYU Clinical Psychology, Ph.D. program here I come!

My Little Baby William!

The day after Shannon and Jeff's wedding Peter blessed little Will in church. He did a great job and it was fun to see him in his element at church. Alicia and Peter are such good parents. They're such naturals.
Isn't he just the cutest?!
The rest of that day was full of a lot of sleeping and eating. We were seriously so exhausted from all the excitement the days before.

The next morning Alicia and Peter dropped by to pick me up in the morning and we spent the day packing up their townhouse and moving some of their stuff to my parents' house. They are living there for a few weeks until their house is built. It was tiring, but it was also fun to spend some time with them.

Plus, there is always the added plus that Will is the most well-behaved baby ever and is adorable on top of that. I was playing with him on the bed and Alicia got a few cute pictures of us that I absolutely love!

Seriously, one of them is the background on my phone and I keep getting distracted because he is just such an adorable little baby boy! Love him so much!

I think I'm all caught up now! Phew! Now I have at least a few weeks where I can fall behind again!

Shannon and Jeff's Wedding!

The day before their wedding was Valentine's Day. We spent the day preparing, which included me cutting up a lot of pictures and putting them on scrapbook paper and Mom and Andrea making the cake. It was so fun! The cake turned out completely amazing and it was significantly easier than some of the cakes in the past. So basically I know what I'm going to do for my cake now. Phew! Glad that is settled.

Seriously it's so pretty!
My cute Dad never forgets me on Valentine's Day. He got both my mom and me roses. I just love him so much!

Derrick came into town, but he already had a date for the night. I told Amy and Spencer I'd watch their kids so they could have their date night. We started out at my parents' for dinner and a little playing then went up to their houses for baths and bed. They had a big day ahead of them, afterall!

I had to iron a few outfits when I got home, so I didn't get to bed as early as I probably should have. But still, I was the first one up the next day. Except for Dad (but no one ever beats Dad). I went down to Shannon's room and made her do a happy dance with me before she went upstairs to start getting ready. Peter, Alicia, and Will came over so Alicia could do Shan's hair. We all watched the U.S. vs. Russia Men's Hockey game that morning (which was totally insane!). Once we were all ready, we headed up to the Brigham City Temple.

Jared and Baylee were nice enough to volunteer their house for me and Taylor to watch the children at so we didn't have to keep them quiet inside the temple. It went pretty quick, actually. The parents came back and we all headed over to the temple.

Taylor and I
When they came out, the girls were so cute and went up and hugged them. Dax came running from across the grounds yelling, "I love you! You're married!" Cutest thing ever. The girls got to carry Shannon's train. Of course, Dax wanted to help but they wouldn't let him because that was their job. So he went up behind Jeff and started "carrying" the back of his suit coat. Man that kid is a cheeser.

The cute couple!

Nate and Mandi's Family
The little girls look like movie stars, huh?
Pictures went pretty quickly and Derrick, Brit, and I went to Zupa's for lunch. (Derrick had specific restaurants on his Utah bucket list.) A little later Alicia and I headed over to Beckstrands to practice the songs we were singing at the dinner with Haley who was nice enough to play the piano for us. Then we all headed down to the reception center.

Obviously it was slightly crazy, because that's how weddings go, but by the time everyone started showing up everything looked beautiful and was totally put together. We ate some delicious food, chatted with friends, and then Dad had Alicia and I come up to sing.

Shannon had asked us to sing "I Will Never Leave You" because it is kind of our sister song. Alicia had the idea we should also surprise her with a funny rendition of a different song too. So I changed the words to "I Can Hear the Bells" so that it fit with Jeff and Shannon and their love story. It was pretty clever, if I do say so myself! And then we made everyone cry singing our sister song. Then the kids stood up and sang "I Love to See the Temple". It was adorable. Dax grabbed the mic about halfway through.

We sent off the happy couple with sparklers, packed up everything and headed home. It was a long day and we were totally exhausted by the time we got home at 9 that night. But it was perfect and beautiful day!

Worcester, Massachusetts

Worcester, Massachusetts. Home of Clark University.

I went out there for an interview for grad school. I got to the Boston Logan airport super late at night and went straight to my hotel so I could sleep. The next day I explored Worcester a little. It's an interesting city. There are some very old buildings, but some new beautiful ones too.

Union Station

Library

City Hall

I found the library and spent a little time in there before heading back to the hotel. It was super, super cold, but the sky was blue and bright.

Sigmund Freud
The next day was my interview at Clark. When we pulled up I noticed the statue of Sigmund Freud. That's when I knew Clark was definitely a good place for a psychology nerd. The interview went pretty well, so afterward I stopped at a bakery called "Sweet" for a couple of cupcakes. I had looked up on the Food Network website to see if there was any place out there I could try and found it.

Red Velvet and Cookies 'n Cream
They were seriously delicious!

I went to bed early that night since I had to leave at 3:30 am to get to the airport in time for my flight home. Lucky I packed everything the night before because I woke up to my shuttle driver calling to tell me he was there. He was 15 minutes early, so it all worked out fine.

Everything went smoothly and I landed in Chicago a few hours later. When I got there, I had quite a few text messages and voicemails from family members making sure I got out of Boston. Boston had started cancelling flights around 7 am, about 50 minutes after we left, because of weather. They were all afraid I was going to get stuck across the country two days before Shan's wedding. I made sure everyone knew I was good and then got on my connecting flight to Salt Lake.

Alicia picked me up at the airport and we went back to Mom and Dad's. She had worked the night before and I was exhausted too, so we mostly just hung out together. Although we did go shopping to ensure she had everything for her outfit for Shan's wedding.

A Little Roommate Love

The first week in February was my interview with BYU. The same day, Emily Camero took her certification exam and Brittni had an interview for an internship next year. Also Haley did really, really well on one of her tests. So we decided to go and celebrate that night.

We went just up the street for some frozen yogurt. We had such a great time! These girls are the best. We always have such a great time and we play off of each other so well. Also, I love these pictures because they show the dynamic in our apartment so well! (Anne and Spencer were swamped with school, so they weren't there, unfortunately.)

Love you cute girls!
