The first couple of weeks of school are always insane. This time it has been more so than I imagined it would be. I had never felt so unprepared for a school year to start. I thought it was mostly just in the work aspect, because I couldn't go to any of the meetings early in the week before school started and my boss was gone that weekend so I didn't know who my students were. But turns out it was also in the school aspect. My class load isn't too hard but my schedule isn't consistent across the week. It has definitely been interesting. Here are some highlights (and lowlights):
-We started school on a Tuesday and it totally screwed me up. I was trying to get into a graduate statistics class (which I did get into, just fyi). The class had two rooms listed, but the professor told me to go to the one in the basement of the SWKT. So at eight in the morning I got there but there was no class in the room, or in any of the other rooms down there except one, which was a Family History of Wales class (Wales the country, not the mammal). By the time I figured out where the other classroom was, it was 8:10 and I didn't think that it would be a good idea to interrupt a class that I wasn't even in yet. Instead I sent an apologetic email and said I was still interested in adding the class. The professor's response came about 1:30 that afternoon: "The class is actually on Monday and Wednesday mornings. So I will see you in class tomorrow morning." Smooth, Krista. Smooth.
-This last Thursday I almost forgot to go to two of my three classes. Seriously, I don't know what is wrong with me. I swear I'm a Senior, not a Freshman.
-The first Friday of the semester Haley and I went on a roommate date to see Audra McDonald in concert. AMAZING! Seriously, it was incredible!
It was life changing, really. She was so personable and cute. She had stories for why she picked the songs she did and I loved every single second of it! When we got home Emily, Anne, and Spencer were at our house and we were all in a majorly psycho mood. Well, not Spencer so much, but the rest of us. We were all laughing so hard we were crying and holding our stomachs. That mood didn't really go away for the rest of the night, much to the dismay of our friends (Garen, Jack, and Zach) who came over to watch a movie with us (The Host--Spencer's pick). I'm surprised any of them have come back after that night. Actually, come to think of it, some of them haven't. Hmm...
-The BYU vs. Texas Football Game.
-"What Does The Fox Say?" Video. (Thank you, Jack for showing it to us!) It's probably the weirdest thing you've ever seen. But we love it. Haley's convinced we need to do it for a ward talent show. I'm not so sure, but I'm sure it would be a hit in any case. We showed it to my parents, Jeff, and Shannon, but I'm certain they were laughing more at Haley and me than at the video.
-We have stayed up WAY too late pretty much every night talking to each other. We all get along so well it's kind of ridiculous. We didn't know our roommate Rachel until she moved in, but she's awesome and adds such a fun, lighthearted dynamic to us. Last night we spent over an hour coming up with ridiculous Halloween costumes and laughing until we couldn't breathe (most of our ideas would not seem nearly as clever in normal hours). It's going to be a long semester if we never sleep, but still, it will be worth it.
-Work has been insane trying to get assignments figured out. I get to run baseball study hall this semester and it is going quite well. Despite the fact that apparently the baseball team recruited a completely different team from last year so I don't know any of them yet. All in good time.
-I thought I wasn't going to get to work with one of my students from this summer because his study hall is during baseball study hall. When I told him he was super upset and went into my boss and told her that I had to be his mentor or he was going to fail on purpose (he wouldn't really). Totally made my day. Partially because he's great and I was sad I wasn't going to get to work with him and partially because it makes me feel like I might actually be making a difference at my job.
-We were introducing ourselves as TAs and I had to come up with something unique about me on the spot (which I hate doing). The first thing that came into my head is that the other day after I organized the fridge so that all 6 of us could fit our food in there Haley told me I had a gift. So I told them all that I'm hyper organized, i.e. I organize the fridge, closets, movies, cupboards, dishwasher, etc. After I said it the professor I work for called up from the back of the room and asked if I was trying to get them to like me or not. It's become a joke between us now (I also do research for him, so I see him often) and I have had more than one student refer to me as the "fridge girl". Yep, again, real smooth.
-My LDS Perspectives on Psychology class is amazing. I feel like I walk away with my mind reeling every class. I come home and discuss it with Anne every time. Eventually she'll get sick of it, but for now she'll just have to deal. I'm sure I'll talk more about it because I find it totally fascinating.
-A kid from my old ward is in 4 of my 5 classes with me. And he has a research lab meeting at the same time and in the same building as I do. So we're basically best friends now. It's quite useful to have someone who knows your schedule as well as you do, though. Especially when you struggle with remembering to go. . .
Here's to a fantastic senior year!
